Today we celebrate three December holiday traditions in our world religions and ethnic practices: Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah began in the evening of Tuesday, December 20, 2011, and ends in the evening of Wednesday, December 28, 2011.
Christmas is one of the TWO major holidays of Christianity. (Easter is the other BIG Christrian holiday.) Christmas celebrates the BIRTH of Jesus Christ, who was born in Bethelehem to a virgin teenager, Mary, and her dutiful husband, Joseph. The simplicity and humility of Jesus' birth symbolizes his gift of love and rebirth to all who follow his teachings. Although the exact day and time of year of Jesus' birth is not known, it has historically celebrated at the end of the year in all parts of the world.
Kwanzaa is NOT a religious holiday, but a secular one started in the African American community. Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community.
Kwanzaa was founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a Black California university professor, in 1966-1967.
