STUDENT SAFETY MONTH
The month of June, 2006,
launches the ninth annual Student Safety Month,
a nationwide initiative to promote safe behavioral practices
by students accross the country. Founded by speaker
and radio personality Carole Copeland Thomas, this special
month was created to assist young people in making the right
choices when driving automobiles, attending graduation parties
and proms, and socializing with others where alcohol, other
drugs or the possibility of violent behavior may be present.
Student Safety Month was
created in an attempt to save lives. Ms. Thomas 17
year old
son, Mickarl D. Thomas, Jr. (affectionately known
as Mikey) was killed in an
automobile accident on June 14, 1997. Mikey had just graduated
from high school six
days earlier, and was the recipient of a full academic scholarship
from Morehouse
College in Atlanta.
Suggested tip sheets on safety,
resources on handling peer pressures and making sound
decisions will be included in Student Safety Month information
kit and are now available.
Carole Copeland Thomas is a keynote speaker, radio talk
show host, onsultant, executive coach, and workshop facilitator
specializing in empowerment, diversity, leadership, and
youth initiatives. The author of several busines articles and cases, Ms Thomas' essay, "An Open Letter To My Dear Friends," published in the 1998 book Sisters Together, and the 2003 book, Personal Empowerment, details the tragic accidental death of her teenage son.
