Today's show will simply explore the wonderful ways that Thanksgiving symbolizes appreciation, gratitude and countless blessings. Forget the hoards of shoppers who will descend on stores at midnight, or the endless merchandising of the Christmas Season. This show will trace the roots of Thanksgiving before the Pilgrims survived that fateful first winter, thanks go the ingenious survival skills of the Native Americans, America's first people.

Short History Of Thanksgiving

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation's first Thanksgiving. The Wampanoag, the Indians in attendance, also played a lead role. Historians have recorded ceremonies of thanks among other groups of European settlers in North America, including British colonists in Virginia in 1619. The legacy of thanks and the feast have survived the centuries, as the event became a national holiday 150 years ago (Oct. 3, 1863) when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping, never on the occasional fifth Thursday.

Thanksgiving...Its Origins

Prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among almost all religions after harvests and at other times.The Thanksgiving holiday's history in North America is rooted in English traditions dating from the Protestant Reformation. It also has aspects of a harvest festival, even though the harvest in New England occurs well before the late-November date on which the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated.

In the English tradition, days of thanksgiving and special thanksgiving religious services became important during the English Reformation in the reign of Henry VIII and in reaction to the large number of religious holidays on the Catholic calendar. Before 1536 there were 95 Church holidays, plus 52 Sundays, when people were required to attend church and forego work and sometimes pay for expensive celebrations. The 1536 reforms reduced the number of Church holidays to 27, but some Puritans, the radical reformers of their age, wished to completely eliminate all Church holidays, including Christmas and Easter. The holidays were to be replaced by specially called Days of Fasting or Days of Thanksgiving, in response to events that the Puritans viewed as acts of special providence. Unexpected disasters or threats of judgement from on high called for Days of Fasting. Special blessings, viewed as coming from God, called for Days of Thanksgiving. For example, Days of Fasting were called on account of drought in 1611, floods in 1613, and plagues in 1604 and 1622. Days of Thanksgiving were called following the victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 and following the deliverance of Queen Anne in 1705. An unusual annual Day of Thanksgiving began in 1606 following the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and developed into Guy Fawkes Day.

One Of The Distinguished Speakers At The Nov 7th Multicultural Conference

William E. Kiernan is the Dean of the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development (SGISD) at UMass Boston. He has served as a content expert for state, federal, and international governments in the areas of employment policy and practice for people with disabilities. Bill is the Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion, a research and training institute housed within SGISD. Bill has over 130 publications about employment, school inclusion, and transition from school to adult life for people with disabilities, and has been the director on over $100 million in grants. These grants have addressed research in employment policies, procedures, and practices; training in rehabilitation counseling; and vision rehabilitation.

Don’t ever think that diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and racial equity only focus on Black people. That is simply NOT true. These subjects encompass the breadth of humanity from Boston to Brazil to Brussels to Beijing to Botswana. EVERYBODY is included in the cross cultural conversation INCLUDING White men and women!

And it is in that spirit that we turn our attention to one White Massachusetts man who IS making a difference and paving the way for others to follow. I met him some three years ago and find his story compelling.

Bob Sansone is a dedicated volunteer, advocate and leader for many diversity and inclusion organizations, groups and initiatives. After 30 years as an insurance professional Bob recently started Sneakers to Beakers....a non profit organization whose mission is to inspire children through a multicultural, sports-based curriculum focused on greater engagement in STEM...Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Targeting underrepresented, disadvantaged minority children, the program is a fusion between traditional sports activities and STEM initiatives.

This is an example of what ONE person CAN do when diversity becomes a life priority.

We’ll also give highlights from last week’s Multicultural Conference with an audio clip from Latoyia Edwards’ thrilling morning keynote address.

Global Inclusion Vice President Paul Francisco Heads Up Tomorrow's Multicultural Conference

Paul is a Vice President of Global Inclusion and Head of University Relations for North America at State Street Corporation. In this role, Paul is responsible for the setting of short and long term strategies to support State Street’s diversity and Inclusion goals globally. He is also responsible for the strategic development of State Street’s On-Campus recruitment activities that include professional development programs for graduates and undergraduates, internships, Co-Ops and community recruitment programs.
Prior to joining state Street, Paul was a Managing Director and Co-founder of Foster & Francisco LLC, an executive search firm based in Boston, focusing on the recruitment and retention of senior managerial and executive level diverse talent across a number of diverse industries, and not-for-profit organizations.
Before starting Foster & Francisco, Paul held a number of HR roles with organizations like Fidelity, Bank of America, The Gillette Company and Amica Mutual Insurance. His experience includes Training and Development, Workforce Diversity, Diversity Recruitment, Consulting, and Client Relationship Management.
Paul is an active member of ALPFA, he is currently serving on the National Board where he oversees the development of ALPFA’s 13 largest chapters which includes; Boston, New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and New Jersey prior to his election to the National Board, he served as the Boston Chapter President from 2008-2010. Paul is a graduate of Boston University where he majored in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, and is a graduate of the UMASS-Boston College of Management Emerging Leaders Program for the Center for Collaborative Leadership, as well as The Partnership Inc., Next Generation Executive Program.

Paul's recognitions include the 2007 “Top 40 under 40” by the Boston Business Journal, as well as one of the 2007 and 2013 100 Most Influential Latinos in Massachusetts by the Hispanic News Press. He was named 2008 Volunteer of the Year by American Training Centers. He was also awarded the 2008 Arnold Z. Rosoff Award for Individual Achievement. This award recognizes outstanding individuals who have had an impact in diversity initiatives in the Boston community. In 2009 he received the Men’s Health Champion Award from the Whittier St. Health Center in Roxbury; he was also recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the 2009 “20 on the Move” which recognizes Hispanic Executives making a difference in Boston, as well as Color Magazine’s 2009 All Inclusive Award for Leadership. Most recently he was recognized by Governor Deval Patrick with a Certificate of Achievement for the work done on behalf of the Hispanic Community in Massachusetts.
