The National Speakers Association National Convention (NSA) just ended last Tuesday in Washington DC, and many who attended are fired up and ready to take their business to the next level of success. Other conventions and conferences have been held this summer and thousands are faced with the task of deciphering their notes, organizing business cards, sorting out countless pictures and video clips and determining the best way to use these resources to their advantage.

Today we’ll talk with Certified Speaking Professional Marquesa Pettway (CSP) to learn how she will take her NSA convention treasures and transform them into new ways to earn revenue and new business opportunities. Based in New York, Marquesa was a pivotal player at the NSA Convention and co-leads Black NSA, a recognized specialized group for speakers of color.

About NSA

In Her Own Words…
I help organizations and speakerpreneurs REINVENT their team, business and overall vision. Often organizations experience change and it can be overwhelming and wreak havoc on productivity, morale and profit. My job is to go in and create a strategic plan with leadership that will assess what's happening now with what needs to happen. I do this in various ways and I do this all over the country for all sized organizations.

I'm still amazed when I see the results begin to take place. I would love to help your organization and if you're thinking I need this woman, call my office at 877-314-8881 x701 and schedule a strategy session to determine what you need and if I can help.

* President and CEO of MLPSpeak, National Communications Group, LLC., a New York City based reinvention consulting firm dedicated to providing organizations and entrepreneurs a Reinvention Roadmap™.

Fresh from his Atlanta experience former National Board Chair Bill Wells, Jr. walks us through the highlights and key issues discussed at last week’s National Black MBA Association Annual Conference.  Thousands attended where corporate decision makers networked and sized up credentialed job seekers during the Career Fair Expo, workshop sessions and general assemblies. It was four plus days of non stop networking for those who attended. And highly anticipated visits from Magic Johnson and Robin Roberts capped off a high stakes, well choreographed opportunity for black business professionals to come together for the good of all.

We’ll also bring Happy New Year greetings to our Jewish listeners celebrating Rosh Hashanah, one of most important High Holidays in the Jewish calendar.

I love meeting new clients!  Having the opportunity of serving the needs of new organizations as they develop new ways to improve and expand their workforce, client base and membership is what has kept me going as a speaker, trainer and consultant for nearly 27 years.  And as we approach 2014, I am more eager than ever to meet and service new clients around the United States and beyond.

Here's where I need your help.  I would like for you to refer 2-3 individuals who can hire me for the following services that I can provide:

  • Keynote Speaker
  • Trainer
  • Consultant
  • Workshop Leader
  • Convention Presenter
  • Executive Coach
  • Retreat Leader
  • Banquet/Meal Emcee
  • Facilitator

And my presentations and assignments primarily focus on:

  • Global Diversity and Inclusion
  • Multiculturalism
  • Team Building
  • Leadership
  • Empowerment
  • Women's Issues
  • Youth Issues

My clients are usually senior leaders in organizations, company presidents, executive directors, human resource directors, committee chairs, project leaders, small business leaders, faith based leaders, government professionals, educational leaders and community decision makers.

I am excited about the new projects and initiatives that I can launch in 2014 and appreciate the individuals who you can send my way.

I will have a special gift for YOU just for sending me 2-3 referrals.  And in tribute to Small Business Saturday (November 30th) I am expanding it to Small Business November-December.  I'll offer a 20% discount to any new client who books my services between now and December 31st.  That's a special gift for YOU and a special discount on my services between now and the end of the year.

  1. Email your referrals to [email protected].
  2. Put the word "Referrals" In Your Subject Line
  3. I'll need the name, organization, job title, phone number and email address for each referral.

MANY THANKS to the countless clients, friends and colleagues who have supported my business endeavors through the years and especially in 2013.

Making The Most Of Your Summer Networking Opportunities

Read Now

Picture
This summer is filled with nonstop social, political, and employment-related activities.
These events are ideal for those looking for a new job, new business deal, or new professional relationship to nurture.

Here in Boston there will be a steady stream of family reunions, weddings, conferences and conventions all summer long. The Urban League Conference kicks off on July 25th with the State of Black Boston with CNN anchor, Soledad O’Brien headlining the luncheon.  Blacks in Government bring their National Training Conference to Boston in August where many of the nation’s top federal, state and municipal professionals will gather for food, refresher courses, and fellowship.

You can read all about these meetings by clicking HERE.
Both meetings were favorably represented in a recently published Associated Press article.  Click HERE to read more.

But that’s just Boston.  Go to any major city on the planet and there is a meeting taking place, speakers like me presenting their messages, and companies on full display with their goods and services. There are church conventions in Orlando (Young People’s Division & Women’s Missionary Society Quadrennial), speaker conventions in California (National Speakers Association National Convention) and business conferences in London (Global Economic Business and Finance Research Conference). Take your pick.  There’s a meeting, social event, or conference taking place every day of the year somewhere in the world.

The big question is how prepared are YOU to take full advantage of your next meeting, conference, convention, or family reunion.?

Here are 10 Ways To Successfully Network at the Next Summer Event coming your way.
1.  Take your business cards everywhere you go.  You can even start a new professional relationship with someone at a funeral this summer with your business cards. (Don’t laugh, I’ve done it!)

2.  After exchanging business cards and before reaching home, write a note on the card reminding you where you met the person, the date of the event and what follow up is needed. (For my Asian friends, writing direcly on the card is a no-no. So write your notes elsewhere and keep them close to yours cards.)

3.  Create a business card file using a three ring binder and plastic business cards sleeves you buy at your office super store. Create a system of categorizing the cards and file accordingly.

4.  FOLLOW UP in a few days or weeks with those whose business cards you’ve collected.

5.  If you’re attending a conference or convention, post pictures, video clips, audio clips and journal entries on your website or social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.

6.  Before following up with your new contacts preview their biographical profile at Linkedin.com.  You don’t have to belong to Linkedin to preview someone’s profile, and you might find out you have more in common with that VIP whose card you now have (same school, worked for the same company, etc.).

7.  Send out HANDWRITTEN notes re-introducing yourself and thanking the person for meeting you at X event.

8.  Set up a regular phone schedule to connect with your new contacts.  Remember that some of your contacts are very very busy and might take 3-6 tries to get them on the phone.  Ask for a 15 minute phone meeting at their convenience.

9.  Be careful with sending gifts to your contacts. With government staff, gifts are frowned upon and often now allowed.  I know of at least one multinational company that will not allow its employees to receive gifts.  Instead send the handwritten note and a photo of the two of you at X event.

10.  Speaking of photos, take your camera EVERYWHERE. Your smart phone, camera, a small pocket camera or a flip video camera will work.  Send your photos and video clips to your new contact.  If appropriate post them on your webpage or Facebook.
(That is exactly what I did when I met Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts recently.  Click HERE to see those photos.)

Enjoy Networking All Summer Long!
