The African Methodist Episcopal Church, on July 6-13 held the 50th quadrennial session of its General Conference and bicentennial celebration in Philadelphia, the birthplace of African Methodism.
The General Conference, the supreme body of the AME Church that meets every four years, brought about 30,000 attendees to Philadelphia, including bishops, presiding elders, ministers, college presidents, deans, chaplains in the U.S. armed forces and more.
The eight-day conference was expected to generate more than 28,400 hotel room nights, with an economic impact of $21.2 million, according to PHLCVB.
The AME Church encompasses 20 districts, spanning 39 countries, and its general conference allows members to discuss and enact policy changes and programmatic issues, and to elect bishops and general officers.
The mission of the AME Church is "to minister to the social, spiritual and physical development of all people."
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton addressed the conference on Friday July 8th. A few weeks later, she was back in Philadelphia in the same convention center for the Democratic National Convention.
Past speakers include Martin Luther King Jr., then-Senator Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
The AME Church was founded in Philadelphia by Richard Allen and incorporated in 1816. Located at 6th and Lombard Streets, Mother Bethel is the cornerstone of the nation's oldest African American denomination. Mother Bethel AME Church is located on land representing the oldest continuously owned real estate parcel owned by African Americans in the United States.
Bicentennial Celebration events took place from July 3rd through July 5th at various locations throughout the city.
