Ever upbeat and enthusiastic. I have seen him describe the endless construction on campus and its inevitable parking challenges as “progress in the making.” And I have seen him take the high ground in professionalism and dignity when career setbacks would have made the average executive cry “foul!”
The students love him. The community respects him. And his tall physique and booming voice make everyone stop and stand at attention. Dr. Keith Motley, Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston Campus is a TRUE friend of the Multicultural Symposium Series and my various business endeavors. He is a FRIEND to the small business community and goes out of his way to support worthy causes. We have held our annual Multicultural Conferences on his campus since 2010 (following a strong partnership with Bentley University) and the partnership between the university and my business is anchored in the dedication and commitment of Dr. Motley. Dr. Motley will bring Greetings during the November 6th Multicultural Conference in his unique and energizing way to let us know we are welcome to his campus. State Street Corporation is the LEAD SPONSOR of the Multicultural Symposium Series. J. Keith Motley, Ph.D., is the eighth chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston. He leads an institution with approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, a full-time and part-time faculty of more than 900, and a $294 million annual budget. In addition to representing UMass Boston locally, nationally, and internationally, Chancellor Motley provides direct oversight of a four-pronged strategic plan for the university whose stated goals are to increase student access and engagement; attract, develop, and sustain highly effective faculty; create a physical environment that supports teaching, learning, and research; and enhance campus-community engagement through improved operational structures. In support of this strategic initiative, Motley is also guiding a 25-year master plan for the physical plant of the university that will significantly enhance the face of the campus and its layout on the scenic Columbia Point Peninsula in a way that invites and welcomes the Greater Boston community to interact with its public university. This project will also include the construction of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, which the late senator requested to be located on the UMass Boston campus next to the JFK Library. The institute will be dedicated to educating the general public, students, teachers, new senators, and senate staff about the role and importance of the senate. Chancellor Motley has also overseen considerable growth in UMass Boston’s faculty research spending, which has increased to more than $46 million in 2008-2009, and an expansion of the university’s private development funding, which has increased by nearly 200 percent under his leadership. Dr. Motley holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northeastern University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Boston College. He also holds an honorary degree awarded by Northeastern University. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s Upward Bound Program. He is married to Angela Motley and is the proud father of Keith Allyn, Kayla Iman, and Jordan Kiara. We hope that YOU will attend this upcoming conference. Truly a great leader and Mayor of the city of Boston. He was the longest serving mayor of the city. Mayor Thomas Menino 1942-2014 Died at 9:10 am at the age of 71. Cancer The Life Of Thomas Menino Biography: Source: Wikipedia Thomas Michael Menino (December 27, 1942 - October 30, 2014) was a Massachusetts politician who served as the 53rd Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1993 to 2014. He was the city's longest serving mayor. Before becoming mayor, the Boston native was a member and President of Boston City Council. Menino was President of the United States Conference of Mayors from 2002 to 2003, and was co-chair and co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. In 2014, he taught the practice of political science at Boston University Early Life Menino was born in Readville, a part of Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood on December 27, 1942. He was the son of Susan and Carl Menino who are both of Italian descent. Menino’s father was a factory foreman at Westinghouse Electric and his grandparents lived on the first floor of his parent’s Hyde Park home. After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain in 1960, Menino enrolled in three night classes at Boston College and began working at Metropolitan Life insurance. Much to his father’s dismay, Menino decided college was not for him.Carl Menino once recalled his son’s reasons for opting out of higher education: “Truman didn’t go to college,” the younger Menino would tell his father.President Harry S. Truman was Menino’s favorite president and personal hero. A portrait of Truman hung above Menino’s desk in his office in Boston City Hall. Menino received an associate degree in business management in 1963 at Chamberlayne Junior College, now Mount Ida College. During his tenure as Boston City Councilor, Menino received a Bachelor of Arts in Community Planning at University of Massachusetts Boston in 1988. Political Life Menino was elected Boston City Councilor for the newly created District 5 in 1983. He served the Hyde Park district for nine years. In 1984, he was named chairman of the council’s Planning and Development Committee. Menino ran unopposed for the city council seat in 1985. In 1986, then-mayor Raymond Flynn offered Menino the position of Parks and Recreation Commissioner. In response to Flynn’s proposal, Menino said it “surprised” him, but that he does “think about all opportunities that come before [him]”.Ultimately, Menino did not assume the position. In 1988, Menino became chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee. This committee was renamed the City Council Ways and Means Committee in 1990, a name it continues to hold today. Menino remained chairman of the Ways and Means Committee for the entirety of his tenure as City Councilor. Menino was known to be a “vigilant watchdog of the city budget,” as hailed by The Boston Globe. Menino was a founding member of the City Council’s Tourists and Tourism Committee, which was created in 1991. In 1992, Menino planned to run for the United States Congress seat that Rep. Brian J. Donnelly (D-Dorchester) was vacating. This 11th Congressional seat served a district that stretched from the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester through communities on the South Shore and into Plymouth County. After federal courts decided to allot Massachusetts only 10 congressional seats, Donnelly’s district disappeared and Menino chose not to challenge Representatives from the other districts. In March 1993, President Clinton appointed Mayor Flynn to be the United States Ambassador to the Holy See. Mayor Flynn accepted the position, effectively making Menino, who was President of the Boston City Council at the time, acting mayor. On July 12, 1993 Menino became acting Mayor of Boston until the upcoming November 1993 election. Mayoral career Mayor Thomas Menino in 2013 1993 Election •Ran against James Brett, Member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Assistant Secretary of Energy, to secure his first mayoral bid after serving as acting mayor. 2013 Election According to Menino’s official biography, “Among his main priorities, are: providing every child with a quality education; creating affordable housing; lowering the crime rate; revitalizing Boston's neighborhoods; and promoting a healthy lifestyle for all city residents.” On March 28, 2013, Menino announced he would not seek a sixth term. Personal Life Tom Menino met Angela Faletra in 1963 when the two were playing tennis in Roslindale, MA on adjacent courts. The two were married three years later and moved to Hyde Park, where they resided until Tom's death. Tom and Angela have two children—Susan and Tom Jr.—and six grandchildren, Olivia Fenton, Giulia Fenton, Will Fenton, Taylor Menino, Samantha Menino, and Thomas Menino. Menino has been hospitalized several times since taking office. He has been admitted for abdominal pain and intestinal inflammation, and was treated for kidney stones in 1995 and 1997. In 2003, Menino underwent surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital to remove a rare sarcoma (DFSP) on his back. The tumor had not spread, and the mayor was able to return to work in a matter of days. In 2004, the mayor's doctors confirmed he has been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, helping to explain his recurring intestinal problems. The condition requires lifelong treatment with anti-inflammatory medication and careful monitoring of his diet. In March of 2014, Menino announced that he had been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer of unknown primary origin that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, and was beginning intensive chemotherapy treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. On October 23, 2014, he made the announcement that he would be halting cancer treatments as well as his book tour in order to spend more time with family. On October 30, 2014, it was announced that Menino had passed away at 9:10 am.. ================= No entrepreneur can remain in business or grow an operation without a steady and supportive clientele. I am no exception, and I am so appreciative of the partnership I have had with Amtrak for many years. When I started the Multicultural Symposium Series in 2008 Amtrak was there to back me. Despite a very turbulent economy, federal government shutdowns, business failures, slowdowns and reorganizations, companies like Amtrak have found a way to support my business when I could have papered my walls with the NO’s I received from other organizations.
The beauty of my relationship with Amtrak is that it has lasted through three sets of decision makers! Enter Mike Esposito, who inherited his company’s commitment to minority business development and continues partner with me and The Multicultural Symposium Series. We will learn more about Amtrak’s commitment to diversity when he delivers a compelling Roundtable presentation during the November 6th Multicultural Conference. State Street Corporation is the LEAD SPONSOR of the Multicultural Symposium Series. In his 34 year career with Amtrak, Mike Esposito has attained extensive knowledge and experience in various areas within the Amtrak organization. He is currently the Manager of Sales and Marketing for Amtrak New England.
