I've heard the responses from those who have either never been a victim or have simply forgotten past incidences where they were either the victim or the perpetrator. "I don't believe them," they say. Or, "Why did they wait so long to bring charges to the guy?" Or, "It can't be true! Mr. X is such a nice guy. He wouldn't hurt a flea!" These comments mount up to potent ammunition AGAINST the accuser and can often shut down a viable complaint before it's even uttered. Today's show will examine 15 credible reasons why women won't tell and why too often the guy gets away Scott free because he knows the court of public opinion often swings in his favor. In this era of high profile men losing their jobs, their status, and their reputation, too often it's the woman who suffers EVEN MORE when she is compelled to keep her mouth shut. ====================== The 15 Reasons Why Women Won’t Tell 1. They are vulnerable. 2. They feel powerless. 3. They are AFRAID! Fear. 4. They have been threatened. 5. It causes internal threats to their job security. 6. It causes external threats to their job security. 7. Lingering Questioning: Am I To Blame? 8. You may not be believed. 9. Fear of Retaliation. 10. Fear of Isolations by colleagues, friends, and family. 11. They are not secure in understanding the company’s sexual harassment policy. 12. Society will blame them, and they will be left, “Holding the bag.” 13. Lack of training. 14. Lack of confidence. 15. The tendency to be risk-averse.

Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. ANN REEVES JARVIS AND JULIA WARD HOWE The origins of Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. Another precursor to Mother’s Day came from the abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2. Other early Mother’s Day pioneers include Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance activist who inspired a local Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the 1870s. The duo of Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, meanwhile, both worked to organize a Mothers’ Day in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some have even called Hering “the father of Mothers’ Day.” ANNA JARVIS The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia. Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. JARVIS DECRIES COMMERCIALIZED MOTHER’S DAY Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants capitalized on its popularity. While Jarvis had initially worked with the floral industry to help raise Mother’s Day’s profile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized. She outwardly denounced the transformation and urged people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies. Jarvis eventually resorted to an open campaign against Mother’s Day profiteers, speaking out against confectioners, florists and even charities. She also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth in legal fees. By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether, and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar. Truly a great leader and Mayor of the city of Boston. He was the longest serving mayor of the city. Mayor Thomas Menino 1942-2014 Died at 9:10 am at the age of 71. Cancer The Life Of Thomas Menino Biography: Source: Wikipedia Thomas Michael Menino (December 27, 1942 - October 30, 2014) was a Massachusetts politician who served as the 53rd Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1993 to 2014. He was the city's longest serving mayor. Before becoming mayor, the Boston native was a member and President of Boston City Council. Menino was President of the United States Conference of Mayors from 2002 to 2003, and was co-chair and co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. In 2014, he taught the practice of political science at Boston University Early Life Menino was born in Readville, a part of Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood on December 27, 1942. He was the son of Susan and Carl Menino who are both of Italian descent. Menino’s father was a factory foreman at Westinghouse Electric and his grandparents lived on the first floor of his parent’s Hyde Park home. After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain in 1960, Menino enrolled in three night classes at Boston College and began working at Metropolitan Life insurance. Much to his father’s dismay, Menino decided college was not for him.Carl Menino once recalled his son’s reasons for opting out of higher education: “Truman didn’t go to college,” the younger Menino would tell his father.President Harry S. Truman was Menino’s favorite president and personal hero. A portrait of Truman hung above Menino’s desk in his office in Boston City Hall. Menino received an associate degree in business management in 1963 at Chamberlayne Junior College, now Mount Ida College. During his tenure as Boston City Councilor, Menino received a Bachelor of Arts in Community Planning at University of Massachusetts Boston in 1988. Political Life Menino was elected Boston City Councilor for the newly created District 5 in 1983. He served the Hyde Park district for nine years. In 1984, he was named chairman of the council’s Planning and Development Committee. Menino ran unopposed for the city council seat in 1985. In 1986, then-mayor Raymond Flynn offered Menino the position of Parks and Recreation Commissioner. In response to Flynn’s proposal, Menino said it “surprised” him, but that he does “think about all opportunities that come before [him]”.Ultimately, Menino did not assume the position. In 1988, Menino became chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee. This committee was renamed the City Council Ways and Means Committee in 1990, a name it continues to hold today. Menino remained chairman of the Ways and Means Committee for the entirety of his tenure as City Councilor. Menino was known to be a “vigilant watchdog of the city budget,” as hailed by The Boston Globe. Menino was a founding member of the City Council’s Tourists and Tourism Committee, which was created in 1991. In 1992, Menino planned to run for the United States Congress seat that Rep. Brian J. Donnelly (D-Dorchester) was vacating. This 11th Congressional seat served a district that stretched from the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester through communities on the South Shore and into Plymouth County. After federal courts decided to allot Massachusetts only 10 congressional seats, Donnelly’s district disappeared and Menino chose not to challenge Representatives from the other districts. In March 1993, President Clinton appointed Mayor Flynn to be the United States Ambassador to the Holy See. Mayor Flynn accepted the position, effectively making Menino, who was President of the Boston City Council at the time, acting mayor. On July 12, 1993 Menino became acting Mayor of Boston until the upcoming November 1993 election. Mayoral career Mayor Thomas Menino in 2013 1993 Election •Ran against James Brett, Member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Assistant Secretary of Energy, to secure his first mayoral bid after serving as acting mayor. 2013 Election According to Menino’s official biography, “Among his main priorities, are: providing every child with a quality education; creating affordable housing; lowering the crime rate; revitalizing Boston's neighborhoods; and promoting a healthy lifestyle for all city residents.” On March 28, 2013, Menino announced he would not seek a sixth term. Personal Life Tom Menino met Angela Faletra in 1963 when the two were playing tennis in Roslindale, MA on adjacent courts. The two were married three years later and moved to Hyde Park, where they resided until Tom's death. Tom and Angela have two children—Susan and Tom Jr.—and six grandchildren, Olivia Fenton, Giulia Fenton, Will Fenton, Taylor Menino, Samantha Menino, and Thomas Menino. Menino has been hospitalized several times since taking office. He has been admitted for abdominal pain and intestinal inflammation, and was treated for kidney stones in 1995 and 1997. In 2003, Menino underwent surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital to remove a rare sarcoma (DFSP) on his back. The tumor had not spread, and the mayor was able to return to work in a matter of days. In 2004, the mayor's doctors confirmed he has been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, helping to explain his recurring intestinal problems. The condition requires lifelong treatment with anti-inflammatory medication and careful monitoring of his diet. In March of 2014, Menino announced that he had been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer of unknown primary origin that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, and was beginning intensive chemotherapy treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. On October 23, 2014, he made the announcement that he would be halting cancer treatments as well as his book tour in order to spend more time with family. On October 30, 2014, it was announced that Menino had passed away at 9:10 am.. ================= Check Out Business Podcasts at Blog Talk Radio with CaroleCopelandThomas on BlogTalkRadio Focus On Empowerment can be heard every Thursday at 1pm Eastern.

Adam Silver, barely on the job for two months, announced that veteran owner of the LA Clippers and billionaire Donald Tokowitz Sterling was banned for life from the NBA and ordered to pay a $2.5 million dollar fine for his private comments that spoke volumes about his contempt and hatred of Black people. Today’s show will not argue the pros and cons of private conversations caught on tape. It will analyze the deeply embedded Code of Segregation so damaging to the fabric of the American infrastructure. We will listen to two audio recordings of Donald Sterling and his mixed race girlfriend V. Stiviano in an attempt to assess why a man who makes millions off of Black people hates them so deeply. In the eyes of a racist, this is “just the culture.” It’s the way it is, the way is always has been, the way it should remain. However, if we, as nation are to move this country forward, this racism mentality must be crushed, defeated and permanently not allowed to see the light of day. And as an African American thought leader, just dismissing Sterling’s comments as simply fool hearty is just not good enough. It must be called racist, rejected and abolished. Tough talk for a very tough topic. =================== Timeline of Events: Source: http://dayandadream.com/2014/04/26/donald-sterling-racist-timeline 1983: Then Villanova head coach Rollie Massimino had enjoyed success in the Big East but the Clippers came courting him to be their head coach. Sterling, who had purchased the team in 1982, met Massimino in 1983 after Massimino had already met with Clipper management who loved him. Sterling’s meeting with Massimino pretty much ends the moment he shows up with a mistress (he’s been married since 1957 and his wife is suing girlfriend for sleeping with him), champagne and asks Massimino, “I wanna know why you think you can coach these niggers.” Needless to say Massimino went back to Villanova and wound up winning the 1985 national championship. 2003: In sworn testimony Sterling is on record in regards to Koreans, blacks, children and more about living in his properties. Among the lowlights – “That’s because of all the blacks in this building, they smell, they’re not clean.” [...] “Is she one of those black people that stink? [...] Just evict the bitch.” Sterling settled. 2003: In another case, this time regarding an old mistress, Sterling testified that he paid her every time they had sex. “When you pay a woman for sex, you are not together with her. You’re paying her for a few moments to use her body for sex. Is it clear? Is it clear?” See? Not just a racist but a sexist womanizer as well. The list goes on and on, including Baylor saying Sterling likened the job to “a vision of a Southern plantation” type structure. Yeah, let’s just say “The Donald” is a rather deplorable human being. ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME! How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? Wikipedia notes that “over the course of his career, Pennebaker has studied the nature of physical symptoms, health consequences of secrets, expressive writing, and natural language, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, The National Institutes of Health, the US Army Research Institute, and other federal agencies for studies in language, emotional and social dynamics.” So there mounting evidence that regular journal writing POSITIVELY impacts your mind, body and spirit! Daily stories of things that happen in your life each day are worth jotting down in a notebook to keep forever. Today we’ll talk about specific topics you can write about and how to organize your thoughts into sections or categories for easy recall. As I discussed in last week’s show...How you can capture your own stories, your joys and sorrows won’t take you more than 20 minutes each day. It’s the basis of my fourth book, My Personal Journal, Chronicle Your Life One Day At A Time. Listen to today’s show and find out how scientific data proves you should journal for long lasting health! =========== About Dr. James Pennebaker Source: Wikipedia James W. Pennebaker (born March 2, 1950) is an American social psychologist. He is the Centennial Liberal Arts Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. His research focuses on the relationship between natural language use, health, and social behavior, most recently "how everyday language reflects basic social and personality processes" Over the course of his career, Pennebaker has studied the nature of physical symptoms, health consequences of secrets, expressive writing, and natural language, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Army Research Institute, and other federal agencies for studies in language, emotion, and social dynamics. A pioneer of writing therapy, he has researched the link between language and recovering from trauma and been "recognized by the American Psychological Association as one of the top researchers on trauma, disclosure, and health." In particular, he finds a person's use of "low-level words," such as pronouns and articles, predictive of recovery as well as indicative of sex, age, and personality traits: "Virtually no one in psychology has realized that low-level words can give clues to large-scale behaviors." In the mid-1990s, he and colleagues developed the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC; pronounced "Luke"), a computerized text analysis program that outputs the percentage of words in a given text that fall into one or more of over 80 linguistic (e.g., first-person singular pronouns, conjunctions), psychological (e.g., anger, achievement), and topical (e.g., leisure, money) categories. It builds on previous research establishing strong links between linguistic patterns and personality or psychological state, but makes possible far more detailed results than did hand counts.Pennebaker and associates have used this tool to analyze the language of Al Qaeda leaders and of political candidates, particularly in the 2008 United States presidential election. He blogs with associates on what linguistic analysis says about political leaders, at Wordwatchers: Tracking the language of public figures, and Pennebaker Conglomerates, Inc. offers free LIWC-based text analysis tools online, including a language style matching calculator and a language-based application of the Thematic Apperception Test ======================== YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME!
