And as I attended her graduation with her first master’s degree earlier this year, I will plan on attending her second master’s degree graduation from this prestigious university sometime in 2014. Public Service is it’s main calling. And its brand of service will touch the lives of every day people around the world. This is the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public School...located in Little Rock, Arkansas...and named after our 42nd Commander in Chief, President Bill Clinton. This is a show you won’t want to miss! =================== About The School... The Clinton School of Public Service is a graduate school in the University of Arkansas system (located on the grounds of the Clinton Presidential Center in downtown Little Rock), and offers the nation's first Masters of Public Service degree. This two-year Masters program is uniquely designed for students of all ages and backgrounds who seek to meaningfully serve the needs of the world, and features actionable field projects (both domestically and internationally) as a part of the curriculum. The Clinton School's Masters of Public Service (MPS) degree is unlike any graduate program in America. A two-year academic program, the Clinton School MPS degree is perfect for students who place a high value on the "doing" of public service (not just theory discussion). To supplement the classroom curriculum, their students complete Field Projects (domestically and internationally) in the public service interest areas that are most meaningful to them. The Clinton School places a very high value on affordability for public service education, and tuition for the full two-year 40-credit hour degree is only $16,000 total (they also offer very generous scholarships to admitted students). The Clinton School application has no application fee, and they invite all interested public servants to apply! The application deadline is January 25, 2013. My Radio broadcast will return next Thursday. Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues, Thanksgiving is a day of reflection and appreciation for the many experiences that makes us who we are. Yes, we all have problems. Some have health issues. Others financial challenges. All of us from time to time have family obstacles. However, on this day, we stop long enough to give thanks for what we do have, good bad or indifferent. In America we celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in November. In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated the second Monday in October. Liberia (West Africa) celebrates theirs the first Thursday in November. Norfolk Island (Australian territory) honors the holiday the last Thursday in November. And versions of Thanksgiving take place in Germany, Grenada, Korea and Japan. And here in North America, lest we not forget the Native Americans. Those original Americans who walked these shores thousands of years before the Europeans ever conceptualized the New World. In 1990 President George H.W. Bush declared November as National American Indian Heritage Month, to commemorate the centuries of importance of our continent’s first people. "What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose." My family will gather at my daughter and son in law’s home in Connecticut later today to break bread together, watch football games, and make sure my granddaughters are well fed! And even in our merriment, I am mindful that family holidays like Thanksgiving can be sad for so many. My younger daughter and I must return to Boston to attend the funeral of the mother of family friends. She died the day before her twin daughters’ birthday. For others, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and/or Christmas are days of strive, deep despair, loneliness, and depression. My heart goes out to those who suffer during the holiday season.
Whatever your circumstances, situation, or expectations, I hope that for just a moment you can stop and reflect on what you do have, what you have achieved and what you have given to others. For my American friends, may this day bring a new sense of devotion and dedication to your family and friends. And before the craze of holiday shopping takes over, may the magic of Thanksgiving fill your heart with joy. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!! Many Thanks, Carole Your feedback and comments are always welcome. Focus On Empowerment can be heard every Thursday at 1pm Eastern.
Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Hours after last week's election, the conservative wing of the Republican Party started their backlash cries of voter fraud, urban upheaval and minority giveaways. Gracious losers would have taken note of their situation while forming new strategies to collaborate and succeed the next time. Not the Republicans. Their sudden acknowledgement of diversity has made them angrier and more defiant than ever. President Obama's popular vote margin was more than George W Bush in 2004. And his electoral victory was decisive at 332 to Romney's 206. So with those numbers, why can't Republicans accept the fact that the billions of dollars spent on negative campaigning yielded little return on their investment? The real winner was diversity, signaling a resounding wake up call to America that every vote counts, whether it be Black, White, Latino, Arab, Native American or Asian. Today we'll look closely at why diversity is defeating the Republican Party, and what they need to do to stop the bleeding. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? Log Onto: www.blogtalkradio.com/globalcarole Listen LIVE or Download Anytime ======================== Jubilation is felt throughout the country and the world. President Barack Obama won a decisive re-election battle against the formidable opponent, Mitt Romney. With more than six billion dollars spent on some of most hateful and racially charged political tactics ever created, the American people pushed back, cast their vote for the President, Congressional representation, state, county, local, and ballot questions that will impact our lives for years to come. There are more women in the US Senate than ever before (20 in 2013), and New Hampshire becomes the first state in the history of America to have an all female congressional delegation and a female governor. America has spoken and our political past is definitely in our rear view mirror. One thing for sure: Diversity matters and it’s here to stay. And for some, it’s a tough reality to face. My response, “Get Over It!” I was jubilant on Election Day and remain a strong supporter of our President. I celebrated the election of Massachusetts’ first woman US Senator (Elizabeth Warren), and worked the polls in New Hampshire to help deliver the Democratic vote. Through that entire experience the multicultural impact of our society was ever present. In New Hampshire, there is diversity, In Massachusetts, there is diversity. From New York to Hawaii, diversity is a way of life in our society and impacting our political decisions throughout the nation. Yet there are some who refuse to accept that people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds are increasingly embedded into the fabric of our society. White voters dropped from 74% to 72% between 2008 and 2012, something that conservative pundits find frustrating at best. African American voters remained the same at 13%, but the Latino community grew from 9% to 10%. More than 73% of Asian votes supported President Obama, and 60% of youth under 30 supported the President. Diversity matters and it’s here to stay. Get Over It On today’s show we’ll analyze what happened on Election Day and why you can no longer keep your had buried in the sand and ignore the demographic changes affecting so much in our communities across the country. Diversity matters more than every. Listen to today’s show, examine the election results and see why diversity is here to stay. ======================== Your Comments Are Welcome Below... -Carole How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live??? Yes, I literally mean it! Today is Election Day in the United States of America. And unless you waited in long lines and early voted or voted by absentee ballot like my younger daughter, Michelle, and I did last week, TODAY is your opportunity to exercise your right to decide the fate of the country. In full disclosure I am: •A rabid supporter of President Barack Obama •A robust supporter of Elizabeth Warren for US Senate •A fanatic about voting To me, voting is part of that “rent” you pay for being an American. It is your affirmation for diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism. I could write volumes on the sacrifices that my ancestors and yours made to protect our right to vote. I grew up in Detroit and remember the bloodbath of the 1960s. We all cried for months when our own Viola Liuzzo was shot and killed on the night of the Selma March in 1965. She was a White housewife and mother of five from suburban Detroit, and we were so proud that she and so many others traveled South to stand for freedom and equality for all. She was gunned down like a dog by the Ku Klux Klan, and her death fortified our resolve to Vote Like Our LIves Depended On It. I will never forget her sacrifice, and the sacrifice of every single Black, White, Asian, and Latino brother and sister who fought and died to protect MY right to vote. Sorry, my friends, I am a FANATIC about voting. And my former husband and I drilled that into our children’s heads...so they are now voting Fanatics, too. I support the re-election of President Barack Obama. As soon as I post this commentary, I am headed to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to work the polls and help deliver the 4 electoral votes that the Obama Presidency needs. I believe President Obama needs four more years to finish what he has started in office. And despite the demonic, hate-filled racially motivated attacks on his character, President Obama has persevered with professionalism and vision. Mitt Romney was my governor, as was his father, George Romney, when I grew up in Detroit. Mitt Romney is NOT George Romney. George, the father, was PRO-CIVIL RIGHTS, and was a decent, respectable man of integrity. Mitt Romney was a mediocre governor who raised fees at every opportunity so that he would not have to raise taxes. He signed the Massachusetts health care bill because the grass roots organizations, like the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, forced him to do so. He didn’t dare challenge their power. And I will never forget the 2002 invitation I extended to him to come on my radio program on WILD-1090 AM to address my audience. He blew me off until I “outed” him on the air as the only gubernatorial candidate who refused to come on my show. Two weeks later he did the interview to stave off embarrassment. I also support Massachusetts’ own Elizabeth Warren for US Senate. Her opponent, Scott Brown, says he’s a Massachusetts Republican, but he votes with the Tea Party Republicans when he is in Washington. The NAACP gave Brown an “F” for his lousy voting record on civil rights issues. He also voted against the pay equity bill for women while in office. I have confronted Senator Brown on two different occasions on his voting record, and he shrugged me off both times when I questioned him. Can’t support a politician who votes against the social and economic issues of my people. Just can’t do it. So much for me and my family. We are civically engaged. My brother, sister in law, nieces, nephews, and cousins VOTE. That’s how we were raised by our parents and grandparents...all from the South. What about you?? Did you register to vote? Did you vote today? Are you taking someone to the polls? If you are in a state like New Hampshire or Minnesota you can register TODAY and vote TODAY. I made calls for the Obama campaign yesterday. I talked with one woman in New Hampshire and told her that she could register and vote today in New Hampshire. She then told me she would “take it under advisement.” Some things you don’t “take under advisement.” You just do it. You Vote Like Your LIfe Depends On It! Tomorrow starts the reset button on either President Obama’s administration or Mitt Romney’s Presidency. As you know, I am rooting for President Obama. I don’t even want to think about a Tea Party led Romney Presidency. It all depends on YOU. YOU hold the key to the future of our country. Vote Like Your Life Depends On It. Vote for the candidates of your choice. But for God’s Sake...and the Sake of our country. JUST VOTE.
