Truly a great leader and Mayor of the city of Boston. He was the longest serving mayor of the city. Mayor Thomas Menino 1942-2014 Died at 9:10 am at the age of 71. Cancer The Life Of Thomas Menino Biography: Source: Wikipedia Thomas Michael Menino (December 27, 1942 - October 30, 2014) was a Massachusetts politician who served as the 53rd Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1993 to 2014. He was the city's longest serving mayor. Before becoming mayor, the Boston native was a member and President of Boston City Council. Menino was President of the United States Conference of Mayors from 2002 to 2003, and was co-chair and co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. In 2014, he taught the practice of political science at Boston University Early Life Menino was born in Readville, a part of Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood on December 27, 1942. He was the son of Susan and Carl Menino who are both of Italian descent. Menino’s father was a factory foreman at Westinghouse Electric and his grandparents lived on the first floor of his parent’s Hyde Park home. After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain in 1960, Menino enrolled in three night classes at Boston College and began working at Metropolitan Life insurance. Much to his father’s dismay, Menino decided college was not for him.Carl Menino once recalled his son’s reasons for opting out of higher education: “Truman didn’t go to college,” the younger Menino would tell his father.President Harry S. Truman was Menino’s favorite president and personal hero. A portrait of Truman hung above Menino’s desk in his office in Boston City Hall. Menino received an associate degree in business management in 1963 at Chamberlayne Junior College, now Mount Ida College. During his tenure as Boston City Councilor, Menino received a Bachelor of Arts in Community Planning at University of Massachusetts Boston in 1988. Political Life Menino was elected Boston City Councilor for the newly created District 5 in 1983. He served the Hyde Park district for nine years. In 1984, he was named chairman of the council’s Planning and Development Committee. Menino ran unopposed for the city council seat in 1985. In 1986, then-mayor Raymond Flynn offered Menino the position of Parks and Recreation Commissioner. In response to Flynn’s proposal, Menino said it “surprised” him, but that he does “think about all opportunities that come before [him]”.Ultimately, Menino did not assume the position. In 1988, Menino became chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee. This committee was renamed the City Council Ways and Means Committee in 1990, a name it continues to hold today. Menino remained chairman of the Ways and Means Committee for the entirety of his tenure as City Councilor. Menino was known to be a “vigilant watchdog of the city budget,” as hailed by The Boston Globe. Menino was a founding member of the City Council’s Tourists and Tourism Committee, which was created in 1991. In 1992, Menino planned to run for the United States Congress seat that Rep. Brian J. Donnelly (D-Dorchester) was vacating. This 11th Congressional seat served a district that stretched from the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester through communities on the South Shore and into Plymouth County. After federal courts decided to allot Massachusetts only 10 congressional seats, Donnelly’s district disappeared and Menino chose not to challenge Representatives from the other districts. In March 1993, President Clinton appointed Mayor Flynn to be the United States Ambassador to the Holy See. Mayor Flynn accepted the position, effectively making Menino, who was President of the Boston City Council at the time, acting mayor. On July 12, 1993 Menino became acting Mayor of Boston until the upcoming November 1993 election. Mayoral career Mayor Thomas Menino in 2013 1993 Election •Ran against James Brett, Member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Assistant Secretary of Energy, to secure his first mayoral bid after serving as acting mayor. 2013 Election According to Menino’s official biography, “Among his main priorities, are: providing every child with a quality education; creating affordable housing; lowering the crime rate; revitalizing Boston's neighborhoods; and promoting a healthy lifestyle for all city residents.” On March 28, 2013, Menino announced he would not seek a sixth term. Personal Life Tom Menino met Angela Faletra in 1963 when the two were playing tennis in Roslindale, MA on adjacent courts. The two were married three years later and moved to Hyde Park, where they resided until Tom's death. Tom and Angela have two children—Susan and Tom Jr.—and six grandchildren, Olivia Fenton, Giulia Fenton, Will Fenton, Taylor Menino, Samantha Menino, and Thomas Menino. Menino has been hospitalized several times since taking office. He has been admitted for abdominal pain and intestinal inflammation, and was treated for kidney stones in 1995 and 1997. In 2003, Menino underwent surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital to remove a rare sarcoma (DFSP) on his back. The tumor had not spread, and the mayor was able to return to work in a matter of days. In 2004, the mayor's doctors confirmed he has been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, helping to explain his recurring intestinal problems. The condition requires lifelong treatment with anti-inflammatory medication and careful monitoring of his diet. In March of 2014, Menino announced that he had been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer of unknown primary origin that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, and was beginning intensive chemotherapy treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. On October 23, 2014, he made the announcement that he would be halting cancer treatments as well as his book tour in order to spend more time with family. On October 30, 2014, it was announced that Menino had passed away at 9:10 am.. ================= 8/7/2014 11 Ways To Convention Success:Making the Most Out Of Your Next Convention, Conference or Trade ShowRead Now Discover Business Internet Radio with CaroleCopelandThomas on BlogTalkRadio Focus On Empowerment can be heard every Thursday at 1pm Eastern. He’ll regularly join Focus On Empowerment with new data, surveys and tangible insights pertaining to the world of work for people of color. ======== About The National Black MBA Association www.nbmbaa.org The genesis of the NBMBAA can be traced back to an historical 1970, two-day conference held at the renowned University of Chicago in which a group of dynamic African-American MBA students, faculty advisors and businessmen, compelled by feelings of social and political unrest, convened to discuss and examine whether to establish a professional organization of Black MBAs. The momentous conference represented some of the most illustrious academic institutions including Harvard, northwestern, University of Southern California, Cornell University, Indiana University, Wayne State, Loyola University and a host of others. In the end, it was determined that a professional organization which celebrated and promoted African-American economic sustenance and empowerment was not only needed buy long overdue, thereby paving the way for the formation of the NBMBAA. The two-day conference entitled, "Survival of Minority Business Students and Graduates in the Business World" was held April 3-4, in the auditorium of the University of Chicago's Center for Continuing Education (UIC). It was funded by a $10,000 grant from Metropolitan Applied Research Center Foundation (MARC), a subsidiary of the Ford Foundation. The purpose of the conference was to explore avenues for professional advancement and economic empowerment among Black MBAs, exchange ideas and information and determine whether there was a need for an organization that would serve as a nucleus for Black business professionals and MBA candidates. Approximately 34 universities were represented and over 150 minority students, faculty members, a distinguished minority businessmen from across the country were in attendance. There were participants from Howard, Purdue, the Wharton School of Business, Colombia, The University of Rochester, Stanford, Dartmouth, Loyola, Harvard, Cornell University, Berkeley, and a host of other schools. Businesses that were represented included DeValco, Inc. Management Information, Inc., Quaker Oats, Bank One, Chase Manhattan Bank and many more. Several questions were raised at the conference. Are graduate schools of business geared to the needs and interests of Black students? Where can a Black with an advanced degree go in corporate management? What are his alternatives to corporate employment? These questions remain relevant today. As the conference neared an end, it was unanimously determined that a national organization, which embraced and espoused the economic advancement of Black MBA candidates, professionals and entrepreneurs, was not only needed buy mandatory in order to satisfy and accomplish the diverse tasks which the conferees had designated for themselves and to address the growing needs and objectives of Black professionals. The country was then divided into regions - East, Midwest, and West in order to formulate proposals for the development of the national organization. On April 2, 1971, nine delegates from across the country returned to the UIC's Center for Continuing Education charged with the responsibility of collaborating and finalizing plans for the national organization. The end result of their collaboration was the genesis for what became the National Black MBA Association, Inc. (NBMBAA or "The Association"), a premier non-profit organization designed to embrace and encourage Black economic empowerment and independence. Today the NBMBAA is a tour-de-force, non-profit organization that boasts members and corporate partners throughout the United States and abroad. Its novel scholarship program has awarded over $5million to deserving minority students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The NBMBAA has expanded its outreach to include 45 chapters and 27 collegiate chapters. ======================== How To Download Today's Show •Can't listen live???
